Subject: New
Higher Education Opportunity for Adults
Date: October 7, 2009
500,000 adults in Louisiana have
attended college but had to leave prior to earning a degree. For this reason, the Board of Regents
established The Center for Adult Learning in Louisiana, or CALL (http://www.yourcallla.org). It is a statewide initiative that aims to
meet the needs of Louisiana’s adult learners.
The Center’s mission is to enhance adult learning opportunities for
citizens of the state through expanded programs and services provided by public
higher education institutions.
Postsecondary
education does not always fit the more complicated schedule of working adults
and this group is often left behind once the rigors of daily life set in. CALL can help bolster the education of state
employees, leading to higher retention and a focused skill-set. Encouraging employees to return to school is
beneficial both to a specific department as well as the state as a whole.
First
and foremost, CALL member colleges and universities offer 4-week and 8-week
fast track classes completely online.
These accelerated courses allow students to work on his or her own time and complete more courses in a shorter time
span. Also, the Center focuses on
promoting Prior Learning Assessment which allows students through testing or
portfolio to earn college credit for college level learning they have already
gained through life experience.
