General Circular No. 001715

To:                    Heads of State Agencies and Human Resource Directors

Subject:             Change in Civil Service Typing Test

Issue Date:         October 24, 2007

The Department of State Civil Service is implementing an upgrade to the software used in its 7002-COAST Typing Skills test currently given in our main testing office in Baton Rouge and in Saturday test sites around the state as proof of typing proficiency.

The software used for the COAST Typing Skills test is being upgraded with newer internet software that will allow for easier test management by our testing offices and sites as well as an easier administration for typing test candidates.

This upgrade will be effective at our Baton Rouge Testing and Recruiting Office on October 29, 2007.  The upgrade will be effective at our Saturday centers in the coming weeks.

This upgrade will only affect the administration of the 7002-COAST Typing Skills test.  No changes will take place concerning the testing times or locations for the typing test.  All other testing procedures and policies concerning the typing test—particularly those involving QUEST—will remain the same.

The Department of State Civil Service will allow applicants to take the internet typing test at an agency that has a typing vacancy announced.  This would not be an official test score for the candidate, to be stored in the Civil Service system, but will serve as one- time proof of the typing proficiency of the candidate.  Any agency interested in giving the typing test in their office can contact Aeli Poydras in the Staffing Division.

If you have any questions concerning the upgrade to the typing test, please contact Aeli Poydras in the Staffing Division at 225-342-8536 or aeli.poydras@la.gov.

Sincerely,
